Abstract: In this thesis the interactions of ultracold neutrons (UCN) with liquid and solid deuterium, and metal surfaces were investigated using time-of-flight (TOF) transmission experiments. Based on them, the scattering cross sections of deuterium were calculated. The results were subsequently compared to an existing theory of surface scattering and a Guinier model was used to estimate the size and concentration of defects inside deuterium crystals. The cryogenic samples were grown and observed optically in a newly developed sample container featuring transparent and highly polished amorphous silica windows.
