Abstract: For a planned manual replacement of a gold seal at the central channel of the research reactor FRM II, the current dose rate was estimated based on a previous rough measurement of 20 steel capsule nuts. The measured values were first used as a basis for determining the average neutron flux. Using the calculated flux, the dose rate profile in both the axial and radial directions at the work area was then estimated with the MicroShield© code. Various models were used for different parts of the object in the calculations. A maximum dose rate of 280 μSv/h was found at a distance of approximately 20 cm behind a 5 cm lead shielding. The radial dose rate profile shows a minimum of approximately 10 μSv/h at 80 cm below the flange and 1 meter from the central axis. The geometry of the lead shielding was optimized.
