Abstract: For chemical analysis, reactions of neutrons with atomic nuclei can be used to induce a radiation characteristic of the element. This is the basis for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA), two established methods for determining the elemental bulk composition in highly different matrices. NAA and PGAA can be combined, resulting in a significant increase in the number of elements that can be detected with low detection limits. The following chapter presents the fundamentals of these methods and provides the reader with an overview of their application in the field of materials research. In this context, we also discuss the capabilities, advantages, and limitations. We supplement this with a brief overview of related analytical methods, as well as an exemplary description of NAA laboratories and PGAA facilities. The chapter concludes with an outlook on future developments in nuclear analytical chemistry with neutrons.
