Abstract: Within the framework of the European HERACLES initiative and of international research and development to reduce the risk of nuclear proliferation, Framatome-CERCA™ and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are working together on the fabrication of monolithic U-Mo fuel for research reactors. A pilot production line for monolithic U-Mo fuel is being implemented at the Framatome-CERCA™ R&D workspace. This is a complete line from uranium metal to full-size fuel plates and for LEU materials. The research encompasses U-Mo alloying, ingot casting, foil rolling, foil coating, plate fabrication and plate inspections. The work is performed under a partnership between TUM and Framatome. This presentation reports on the progress made by Framatome-CERCA™ on implementing the equipment and developing the products. It focuses on the development of alloying, casting, canning and hot-rolling of full-size foils using inert materials and depleted uranium.
