Abstract: The elemental analysis is crucial for the improvement and development of new materials. Neutrons and as well positrons at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching are used as tools to analyze different components. In many cases, they are more sensitive than other analytical methods, as for example the neutron activation analysis (NAA), which is still one of the best methods for trace elements. Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) is mainly used for major and minor-element analysis, and both can be combined in one method: in-beam activation analysis at the MLZ. Still, standard NAA is used at the neutron source FRM II in the rabbit irradiation facility, e.g. to detect the abrasion in machines.
