As part of the first set of instruments, a triple axis spectrometer is under construction at the cold source in the reactor hall. This instrument will be mainly used to study inelastic magnetic phenomena in condensed matter physics. Besides an unpolarized beam setup, PANDA is equipped with devices allowing full polarization analysis. This instrument largely profits from its vicinity to the reactor, and uses state of the art neutron optics. Thanks to the large focusing Heusler monochromator and analyzer the neutron flux of the polarization setup will be of the same magnitude as that of an unpolarized beam at a high flux reactor. The accessible energy and Q ranges will be extremely large due to an advantageous flux distribution of the cold source and a particular construction of the beam tube and the biological shielding which contain supermirror neutron guides. This is done either by irradiation with x-rays at 80 K or by electron transfer from photoexcited tris(2,2′-bipyridine)-ruthenium(II) at 20 K. At temperatures above 150 K, the conformational transition toward the equilibrium deoxymyoglobin is observed. X-ray crystallography, Raman spectroscopy, and temperature-dependent optical absorption spectroscopy show that the metastable state has a six-ligated iron low-spin center. The x-ray structure at 115K proves the similarity of the metastable state with metmyoglobin. The Raman spectra yield the high-frequency vibronic modes and give additional information about the distortion of the heme. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the line shape of the Soret band reveals that a relaxation within the metastable state starts at ∼120 K. Parameters representative of static properties of the intermediate state are close to those of CO-ligated myoglobin, while parameters representative of dynamics are close to deoxymyoglobin. Time-resolved spectroscopic measurements after photodissociation of the ligand revealed a complex ligand-binding reaction with multiple kinetic intermediates, resulting from protein relaxation and movements of the ligand within the protein. To observe the structural changes induced by ligand dissociation, we have carried out X-ray crystallographic investigations of carbon monoxy-myoglobin (MbCO mutant L29W) crystals illuminated below and above 180 K, complemented by time-resolved infrared spectroscopy of CO rebinding. Here we show that below 180 K photodissociated ligands migrate to specific sites within an internal cavity--the distal haem pocket--of an essentially immobilized, frozen protein, from where they subsequently rebind by thermally activated barrier crossing. Upon photodissociation above 180 K, ligands escape from the distal pocket, aided by protein fluctuations that transiently open exit channels. The electromagnetic levitation technique is used here to undercool bulk melts without containers. This technique, combined with energy dispersive x-ray diffraction of synchrotron radiation, allows in situ study of the rapid crystallization of undercooled Ni–V alloys. The binary Ni–V alloy was chosen as a model system, because it shows phase competition of three different crystallographic phases, bcc, fcc, and an intermetallic phase of tetragonal structure at intermediate concentrations. The diffraction experiments provide for direct identification of the various crystalline phases formed from the nonequilibrium state of the undercooled melt. Prof. Dr. Klaus Boening, the president of the conference, welcomed more than one hundred experts from all continents to the event hosted by the Munich Technical University. Eight Technical Sessions and three Poster Sessions presented and discussed current and promising results of research and application, work on reactors and neutron sources currently under development, and plans for future facilities. New neutron sources are being planned in Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, China, and France. Construction of some of these plants is likely to begin in the near future. Prof. Wolfgang Glaeser, Munich Technical University, in his keynote address discussed the future role of research reactors and neutron sources, which comprised not only the classical areas of basic research and application-oriented research, but also many applications in technology and in the life sciences, e.g. in medicine. The long period for which existing plants had been operated, and the need for powerful sources, urgently necessitated decisions to build new facilities. The current status of work on the Munich II research reactor (FRM-II), which will play an important role in neutron research in Germany, as presented by H.-J. Didier (Framatome ANP GmbH). (orig.) [German] Die achte Weltkonferenz der Planer, Errichter und Betreiber von Forschungsreaktoren - IGORR 8 (International Group on Research Reactors) fand in diesem Jahr vom 17. bis 20. April 2001 in Muenchen statt. Professor Dr. Klaus Boening, Praesident von IGORR, konnte an die 100 Experten aus allen Erdteilen im Namen der ausrichtenden Technischen Universitaet Muenchen begruessen. In acht Technischen Sitzungen und im Rahmen von drei Poster Sessions wurden aktuelle und zukunftsweisende Ergebnisse aus Forschung und Anwendung, Arbeiten an aktuell in der Errichtung befindlichen Forschungsreaktoren und Neutronenquellen sowie Planungen fuer zukuenftige Einrichtungen vorgestellt und diskutiert. Der Bau neuer Neutronenquellen wird derzeit in Australien, Taiwan, Thailand, China und Frankreich geplant und ist ziemlich sicher, so dass in naher Zukunft mit Baubeginn fuer einzelne Anlagen gerechnet werde. Professor Dr. Wolfgang Glaeser, Technische Universitaet Muenchen, stellte in seinem Festvortrag die zukuenftige Rolle von Forschungsreaktoren und Neutronenquellen vor. Diese umfasst nicht nur die klassischen Gebiete der Grundlagenforschung und anwendungsorientierten Forschung, sondern auch vielfaeltige Anwendungen in den Bereichen Technik und Lebenswissenschaften, z.B. der Medizin. Auf grund der Betriebszeit der heute zur Verfuegung stehenden Anlagen und des Bedarfs an leistungsfaehigen Quellen sind Entscheidungen fuer den Neubau dringend erforderlich. Poly(styrene-block-p-methylstyrene) diblock copolymer films on top of silicon substrates are examined with scanning force microscopy and off-specular X-ray scattering. At film thickness below the lamellar spacing of the bulk material a dewetting is observed. The kinetics of the film destabilization are explainable within a spinodal dewetting model. The observed dewetting structures belong to a wet dewetting. The lattice parameter of the milled products remains essentially unchanged from that of equilibrium ZnFe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> with the steady-state average particle size found to decrease to d=18(2) nm on low energy milling compared with d=8(1) nm on high energy milling. The room temperature Mossbauer spectra of the milled materials have been analysed using two doublets, one of which is considered to be associated primarily with the octahedral lattice sites. Spectral broadening is observed with decreasing particle size, particularly below d~10 nm, for which the effects of magnetic hyperfine splitting become evident. The mean inversion parameter of nanostructured ZnFe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> is found to increase to c~0.75 for particle sizes of d~8 nm reflecting the systematic evolution of zinc ferrite from its normal spinel structure towards an inverse spinel structure on mechanical treatment as observed previously. The resolution of the presently used detectorsystems is restricted by scintillator properties, optical light transfer, and charge-coupled-device granularity, which impose a practical limit of about 1 μm spatial resolution at detector efficiencies of a few percent. A recently developed detector, called the Bragg magnifier, achieves a breakthrough in this respect, satisfying the research requirements that ask for an efficient advance towards the submicron range. The Bragg magnifier uses the properties of asymmetric Bragg reflections to increase the cross section of the diffractedx-ray beam. Magnifications of up to 100×100 can be achieved even at hard x-rays energies (>20 keV). In this way, the influence of the detector resolution can be scaled down accordingly and the efficiency increased. Such a device has been developed and successfully integrated into the Microtomography Station of the Materials Science Beamline of the Swiss Light Source.
